The TASCAM DR-1 puts world-dominating power into your pocket. Its built-in stereo microphones include a unique variable angle mechanism, so you can set it to record from any angle. The DR-1 is the first portable recorder to include a 1GB card, so you'll have plenty of CD or MP3-quality recording time for long rehearsals and concerts. And with a street price of just $299, everyone's gonna want one.

A pair of microphones is mounted on a variable angle mechanism, which allows the recorder to record from almost any angle. The built-in stereo condenser microphones are arranged for a wide stereo image, and an external mic can also be used. The unit includes a generous 1GB SD card for hours of recording at MP3 or WAV file formats. The DR-1 also includes auto gain control and analog limiting for easy setup and a low-frequency cutoff to eliminate handling or wind noise.

"Good, but with a couple HUGE drawbacks" 2009-12-30
By Josh Sayers (Ontario)
Overall this unit is great, however there are a couple features that unfortunately keep it from being very useful for everyone. Many people may be happy with it, but I really wish I had not purchased it.

I am a guitarist and record and write my own music. I was looking for a recorder that would allow me to record professional quality on the fly wherever I am (I play acoustic) and whenever inspiration hits. Then I could download those riffs to my computer and with editing software put them together how I wanted.

BUT, I cannot do this with the DR-1 for these reasons:

(1) While the DR-1 does have a metronome is is for playback only. You CANNOT use the metronome to record!!!

(2) There is an overdub feature, and while this does not compromise the original track, the new track includes BOTH the original track and the new recording. This means that you CANNOT record to a click track unless you want that track to appear in your final recording. Also, it prevents you from using your recording with another recording later on. For instance, say you want to record a solo-type thing on top of one riff, but you later decide you would rather put that solo elsewhere in the song. You can't separate that solo from the riff since they are in one recording now.

Both of these appear to be relatively easy fixes for Tascam to incorporate in a firmware update, but as is, it makes it impossible for me to use it to write and record music. There are always going to be small time changes in my recordings, and unless I use a metronome or click track I can't make a song out of several riffs that were recorded over a period of time. It is really too bad, because I had really high hopes for this thing. I don't know whether other competitors are the same or different, but if you plan on recording like this, the DR-1 is not what you want.

 "Excellent Recorder" 2009-11-25
By Mack
I use this device all the time -- I record my own practice sessions, I record the band, I record my own solo performances. The quality is good enough to create a good working demo. And it has lithium ion batteries, so I don't have to worry about replacing batteries all the time. And with a 4 gig card you can record forever. Great product.

 "Only drawback is hiss" 2009-11-01
By amorteur (United States)
The sound quality on this is excellent, esp. if you are used to older-generation tape recorders or any other portable device. However, most of my recording is acoustic guitar or voice, and there is actually a lot of hiss on the recording. With a rock band or even a loud acoustic ensemble, I would imagine that this is barely noticeable; however, if you are a classical guitarist, you might want to look for something higher end.

I plugged a 100-dollar Audio Technica mic into this unit, and I'd have to say that the on-board mic does a better job. Pretty surprising considering the entire unit only cost about 200 bucks at Guitar Center.

 "Tascam recording" 2009-10-19
By Debbie J Hawkins (North Carolina)
I purchased this item for two reasons - to record meetings as well as music. I have not used it yet to record music, but did try and record a meeting. I guess I should have spent more time working with it, because it did not record. I have since purchased a microphone, and recorded conversation - which worked fine. It picks up well, and does not seem to have a lot of background noise.

 "Tascam DR-1" 2009-09-11

Muy buena grabadora. Lo único es que en ambiente libre le falta un poquito para mejorar la calidad del sonido. Pero aún así me ha dado un buen rendimiento.
